Pastoral Care and Clinical Pastoral EducationMercy Hospital Pastoral Care

Mercy’s Pastoral Care Team offers pastoral counseling, as well as emotional and spiritual presence, both routinely and in crisis situations. Pastoral Care is offered to people of all faiths. We also provide grief support and counseling for families whose loved one has died, or is in the process of dying, as well as prayer support for patients, families and staff.  For Catholic patients Holy Communion is available Sunday through Saturday; confession is celebrated upon request; Sacrament of the Sick, the anointing, for restoration to the body, mind, and spirit is available.

Chaplains are routinely available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily and at other times for emergencies. Our chaplains are fully integrated and respected participants in Mercy's treatment teams. We are available to assist the clinical team with ethical concerns, including consultations around end of life questions and other often difficult personal decisions. Additionally, we are available for treatment planning conversations with patients, families and staff.

The nurse can contact a chaplain for a conversation, support, guidance, the sacraments, prayer, grieving, thanksgiving, or help with decisions about values and decisions regarding advanced directives or other issues.

Our current staff include, Fr. John (Jack) T. Crabb ,SJ, Director of Clinical Pastoral Education and Director of Pastoral Care Department.; Sr. Patricia Mooney, RSM; Fr Robert V. Paskey, SJ; and Rev. Kenneth Wish our Protestant Chaplain. Many Eucharistic Ministers volunteer to bring Communion to the patients. We have Associate Chaplains of other faith traditions that are available upon request.

We provide chaplaincy coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We may be contacted by calling 879-3358, or by calling Mercy's main number, 879-3000, and asking the operator to page the on-call chaplain.

Mercy Hospital is also a site for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Extended and intensive summer units are offered. For more information contact Fr. Jack Crabb, SJ at (207) 879-3744
